Join me on a day boat trip to Caja de los Muertos from Ponce, Puerto Rico!
Day Trip:
If you are looking for an amazing BOAT day adventure, stop what you’re doing and BOOK your day excursion with Waterland Adventure here.
This is my second time visiting #CajadelosMuertos, and let me tell you, it did NOT disappoint. I first went back in 2015, before Hurricane Maria, and it wasn’t as exclusive as this time around. Please note, Caja de los Muertos has been closed for a while due to the hurricanes and other reasons, so finding a local company that offers trips again made my day!
Brief History:
Caja de los Muertos, or Coffin Island, is a small island off the coast of Ponce. Its name is shrouded in mystery and folklore, with tales ranging from pirate treasure to its coffin-like shape when viewed from afar. This uninhabited island is now a protected nature reserve, known for its pristine beaches and diverse marine life.
We booked this experience about a month in advance. It’s a private boat for up to 6 guests. You will meet at Tablado La Guancha in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and take a 20-25 minute boat ride to Caja de Muertos!
Our group of 6 went on a Wednesday, and it truly was magical. We had the whole island practically to ourselves. We were there from 9 AM to about 2 PM. The staff at Waterland Adventure was excellent, from setting up chairs and umbrellas on the beach to providing us with lunch and non-alcoholic beverages, and even showing us nurse sharks and fishes. It was a beautiful day! I highly recommend this hidden gem off the coast of Ponce, Puerto Rico.
Things to Note:
- Ponce is about an hour’s drive from the San Juan metro area, so either stay in the Ponce area or make sure you have a designated driver and car!
- Alcoholic beverages are not included in the price, but you can bring your own cooler with your drinks!
- Keep applying sunscreen because you WILL get burnt. I swear this is the only place on the island where I get toasty no matter how much sunscreen I put on!
- Bring shoes you can hike in. There is a short hike, but I wish I had my TEVAS instead of my flip-flops.
Wildlife and Activities:
The island is home to various species of birds, including the endangered brown pelican. Keep an eye out for iguanas and other reptiles as you explore! Apart from lounging on the beach, you can snorkel in the clear waters to see vibrant coral reefs, take a short hike for stunning views, or watch for local wildlife.
What to Bring:
- Sunscreen (reef-safe preferred)
- Hat and sunglasses
- Swimsuit and towel
- Comfortable hiking shoes
- Water and snacks (lunch is provided, but extra snacks can be handy)
