Why Knoxville, Tennessee Should Be Your Next Weekend Getaway

When most people think of Tennessee, destinations like Nashville and Gatlinburg usually come to mind. But after being invited by Visit Knoxville for an unforgettable press trip, I quickly realized that Knoxville deserves a spot on every traveler’s bucket list.

From incredible local restaurants and hidden speakeasies to outdoor adventures and iconic landmarks, Knoxville perfectly blends city charm, history, art, and nature. If you’re planning a trip, here’s everything I experienced and why I think Knoxville is one of Tennessee’s most underrated destinations.

Where I Stayed: Embassy Suites by Hilton Knoxville Downtown

My home base for the trip was Embassy Suites by Hilton Knoxville Downtown, and it was the perfect location for exploring the city. Being within walking distance of Market Square, restaurants, murals, and downtown attractions made getting around incredibly easy.

One of my favorite perks was the complimentary breakfast each morning and the evening reception. The rooftop is absolutely gorgeous! The bottom left picture of the wine glass with the quote “the view is better up here” is from the rooftop! Plus, the hotel restaurant Kopita ended up being one of the biggest surprises of the trip. The food was absolutely delicious, Mediterranean style and everything was fresh. What an honor that we even met the owner/head chef!

Welcome to Knoxville

One of the sweetest parts of arriving was receiving a welcome gift box from Visit Knoxville and token for ice cream from the local favorite Cruze Farm. Inside the box was were locally made goodies including coffee, chocolate, seasonings, coasters, and other Knoxville-inspired treats.

As someone who loves supporting local businesses, this was such a thoughtful introduction to the city and immediately gave me a taste of Knoxville’s community-focused culture! Thank you Kristen and her team at Visit Knoxville!

My first meal in Knoxville was brunch at Potchke Deli, a locally loved Jewish deli serving some seriously incredible food!!!

I ordered the Pastrami Reuben, and honestly, it was one of the highlights of the trip. Packed with flavor, perfectly balanced, and absolutely worth ordering. I paired it with an iced chai latte that was equally delicious.

If you’re searching for where to eat in Knoxville, put @potchke at the top of your list!

Outdoor Adventures in Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness

One thing that surprised me about Knoxville was how much outdoor recreation exists right outside the city. Literally a 5 minute drive (if that)! Baker Creek Preserve is part of Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness and is a paradise for hikers, mountain bikers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Even if you’re not hitting the trails, the famous orange walls make for a fun photo stop and just being outdoors! The picture above is a trail that mountain bikers used to practice – I was in shock how well maintained it was!

Fort Dickerson Quarry

Next, we visited Fort Dickerson Quarry (pictures above), and this may have been one of the most relaxing moments of the trip. Even though I did see a river snake but still made it alive so don’t worry (LOL)!

Floating on a tube surrounded by beautiful scenery felt like the perfect Tennessee summer activity. It’s hard to believe a spot this peaceful exists just minutes from downtown Knoxville. Rent all your equipment from @riveresports

After an active afternoon, we headed to Tern Club.

The atmosphere was stylish, welcoming, and exactly the type of place I love discovering while traveling!

I ordered the TC Carajillo, their take on an espresso martini, and it was the perfect pick-me-up after a day of exploring.

OKAY now for Day Two: Exploring Downtown Knoxville

Starting with… Breakfast at French Market Creperie

The next morning started with breakfast at French Market Creperie. This cozy little spot did not disappoint and let me tell you they had OPTIONS for days!!!

The crepes were absolutely delicious and the perfect way to fuel up for another day of exploring Knoxville. We all sat upstairs and it reminded me of a cafe shop that I visited in France! 10/10 would stop here!!!

Next we walked to… Visit the Sunsphere

One attraction you absolutely cannot miss is the Sunsphere.

Built for the 1982 World’s Fair, this iconic Knoxville landmark offers panoramic views of the city and a fascinating look into Knoxville’s history. And it’s only $10 per adult! Kids ages 5-12 are $5.

Fun fact: it’s often compared to famous structures like the Space Needle and the Eiffel Tower because of its unique design and significance.

The views alone make it worth visiting.

Now who doesn’t love Coffee & Chocolate? Our next stop walking was this staple coffee shop called: Coffee & Chocolate.

I ordered a Banana Pancake Latte, and I can confidently say it’s one of the most unique coffee drinks I’ve ever had.

If you’re a coffee lover looking for something different, this is a must-visit.

Now on the same strip where our hotel is located you can find The Visit Knoxville Visitors Center is much more than a tourism office.

Not only can you pick up local gifts and souvenirs, but they also host live music performances throughout the week. It’s a great place to learn more about Knoxville’s music scene and discover local events.

One thing you’ll quickly notice while walking downtown is Knoxville’s incredible public art.

Murals can be found throughout the city, making every stroll feel like a self-guided art tour.

Many visitors don’t realize that Knoxville is often referred to as the Cradle of Country Music, making it an important stop for music lovers exploring Tennessee.

SPEAKEASY ALERT!!!! If you’re looking for a unique nightlife experience, make sure to visit Peter Kern Library.

Hidden behind The Oliver Hotel, this speakeasy-style cocktail bar feels like stepping into another era. The intimate atmosphere, library-inspired design, and craft cocktails make it one of Knoxville’s coolest hidden gems. Please see pictures above for a sneak-peek. The speakeasy code is sometimes listed on their instagram or just simply look in the hallway for clues wink wink!

Next stop…. A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Tennessee Theatre

One of the most memorable experiences of the trip was receiving a private tour of the historic Tennessee Theatre.

Originally opened in 1928, the theater is absolutely stunning and filled with fascinating history. Whether you’re attending a show or simply admiring the architecture, it’s worth adding to your Knoxville itinerary! I can only imagine how different it must have been back in 1928.

Next stop… Beer and Glassblowing (what????)

One of the most unique experiences on the trip combined two things I never expected to enjoy together: craft beer and glassblowing.

Watching the artists (s/o to Matthew) work while learning about the process was fascinating, and it gave me an even greater appreciation for local craftsmanship. Of course, sampling a flight of local beers didn’t hurt either!

Here are a couple more things to check out if you are visiting Knoxville:

  • Explored the curated exhibits at Lilienthal Gallery and got a glimpse into Knoxville’s vibrant arts community.
  • Enjoyed creative cocktails and a lively atmosphere at Mother Bar (plus a quick photo booth stop).
  • Wrapped up the evening with a scoop from Cruze Farm Ice Cream, a Knoxville favorite that lived up to the hype.

Before this trip, Knoxville wasn’t a destination I knew much about.

Now, it’s a city I can’t stop recommending.

Whether you’re looking for incredible food, outdoor adventures, craft cocktails, local art, live music, or unique experiences, Knoxville offers a little bit of everything while still maintaining its authentic charm.

Thank you to Visit Knoxville for inviting me to experience the city. I left with a full camera roll, a full stomach, and a much deeper appreciation for everything Knoxville has to offer.
