Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, is the world’s largest beer festival… but it’s also so much more than beer. Think: traditional Bavarian outfits, fairytale castles, mouthwatering German food, and an atmosphere full of music, dancing, and culture.

Last year, I went to Oktoberfest for the first time and amigas… it was something else. If you’re planning to go, this blog covers everything you need to know about Oktoberfest outfits (dirndl & lederhosen), where to stay, what to eat, and the best things to do in Munich beyond the beer tents.

👗 Oktoberfest Outfits: Rent or Buy Dirndl & Lederhosen

One of the first things you’ll notice when you arrive: everyone is dressed up. Don’t worry—you don’t have to spend hundreds to join in.

  • Dirndl for women: A dress with a blouse and apron (colors, styles, and lengths vary).
  • Lederhosen for men: Traditional leather shorts with suspenders, usually paired with a checkered shirt.

👉 Where to rent Oktoberfest outfits in Munich

  • Rental shops around the city offer authentic dirndls and lederhosen for the weekend. Prices are much cheaper than buying, and you don’t have to pack it in your suitcase.
  • If you do want to buy, skip the cheap online sets and shop locally for better quality.
  • We rented from Bavarian Outfitters and in 2024 the cost for one day rental for both the women and men outfit was a total of $112.60 euros. We suggest that you make your appointment online to pick up. You are allowed to try on the items before you pick up your final choice.
  • Below is a picture of the outfits my handsome hubby and I wore. We also got professional pictures taken with the best: Flytographer

If you book make sure to use my code: BIANCAALBA to get $20 off your first shoot!!!! Treat yourself sis!!!!

💡 Travel Tip: Comfortable shoes are a must. You’ll be walking, dancing, and standing for hours. I had my doctor shoels white kicks and they lasted all trip!

🛏️ Where to Stay for Oktoberfest in Munich

Hotels and Airbnbs book up fast for Oktoberfest—sometimes a year in advance! Here’s what to know:

  • Best areas to stay:
    • Theresienwiese (Oktoberfest Grounds): Walking distance but $$$.
    • Munich City Center (Altstadt): Near Marienplatz and easy access to tents.
    • Neighborhoods near train lines: Save money and hop on Munich’s excellent U-Bahn. This is what we did! We were really lucky with our airbnb but it also was a good 30 minute train but let me tell you the train systems in Germany are something else (in the best way possible)!

💡 Travel Tip: If Munich is booked out, look at nearby towns like Augsburg or Regensburg and take the train in.

🍺 What to Expect Inside Oktoberfest Beer Tents

It’s not just about drinking—Oktoberfest feels like one big Bavarian party!!!

  • Beer tents: Each has its own vibe. Some are touristy and rowdy, others are more traditional with locals. Book reservations if you want guaranteed seating especially for parties bigger than 5!!!
  • Food you must try:
    • Giant pretzels 🥨
    • Roast chicken (Hendl) 🍗
    • Sausages & schnitzel 🌭🍖

💡 Travel Tip: Beers are served in liters. Pace yourself!

🏰 Things to Do in Munich Beyond Oktoberfest

If you’re spending a few days in Bavaria, don’t miss these must-sees:

  • Neuschwanstein Castle: The real-life “Cinderella Castle” just a few hours away. → Book Here!
  • Marienplatz & Old Town: Munich’s central square with the famous Glockenspiel. We did a night tour with Black book Tours and highly recommend → Book Here!
  • Viktualienmarkt: Daily food market with fresh produce, cheese, and Bavarian specialties. Highly recommend our foodtour → Book Here!

🥨 Final Oktoberfest Travel Tips

  • Bring cash—many tents don’t take cards and it’s the easity way to pay for your drinks!
  • Go during the weekdays if you want fewer crowds and DON’T go during opening weekend like we did!!! It was A LOT!!!
  • Don’t stress about planning every detail—the best memories come from spontaneous fun.

✨ Whether you’re going for the beer, the castles, or the dirndl photoshoot of your dreams (we hired a photographer from Flytographer), Oktoberfest is a once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience. As someone who’s been, I can tell you—it’s even better than Instagram makes it look!!!
